CRN 18923 / Th 10:00AM - 12:20PM / 114 Music Building
This seminar explores laments in popular music and theater traditions, from the ancient Greeks through early modern opera through contemporary performance art and concert music. In thinking about the stylization of lamenting, in these different traditions, we will reflect on what musical lament can tell us about the cultures that produced it. We will also consider the value of lament in the contemporary arts, as a response to modern life and current crises.
