European Cultural Dis/Unification Workshop Runs in Tandem with CLST Common Seminar Theme

February 21, 2014 - 9:00am to February 22, 2014 - 6:15pm

Professor Randall Halle, this year's Common Seminar instructor has assembled a stimulating two-day line-up of speakers who will address the issue of Cultural Dis/Unification with a focus on Europe, the focal theme of his common seminar.

Globalization and transnationalism constitute forces that are as much cultural as economic and political. Moreover, their combined impact affects people and countries differentially. Regions and areas have distinct profiles that are affected by movement toward union, such as the European Union. This workshop will explore the dynamics of cultural unification in the EU area from a variety of perspectives.

Along with attention to the cultural production compelled by the EU in the current moment, the workshop will of necessity attend to the geographic and historical complexities of European cultural unification. Of the three, cultural unification is the most open-ended; culture does not experience political borders as its limits nor can its productivity be assessed by econometrics alone. European culture is not limited to the EU 28, nor is it even limited by the European continent.
