Director Election Update

Breaking news: New Director Election to be held in Fall 2023; Program to be Run by the DSAS Graduate Office beginning 30 June 2023.

Our recent Directorship election resulted in the Executive Committee’s recommendation to DSAS administration that Professor Mohammed Bamyeh should serve in that capacity.  Administration and Professor Bamyeh, however, were unable to reach a satisfactory agreement about the terms of his service.  He has asked CLST to circulate an email explaining his declension of the Directorship, which we will do separately later today.

The Executive Committee deemed it unwise to try to run another nomination and election process until the new academic year.  Thus, by agreement with DSAS administration and the assent of the Executive Committee, CLST will be run by the DSAS Graduate Studies Office when my contract ends on 30 June 2023, until a new Director can be appointed.  That is to say that the Graduate Studies Office will advise existing certificate students about availability of courses and assist with graduation paperwork, as well as administer the CLST fellowship in consultation with the CLST Executive Committee.  However, that office will not be involved with other administrative responsibilities such as programming, course offerings, or new student admissions.

The current Executive Committee, consisting of Olga Kuchinskaya (COMMRC), Ruth Mostern (HIST), Christel Temple (AFRCN), Kaliane Ung (FRIT), and Courtney Weikle-Mills (ENGLIT), will stay on to oversee the Director’s election in the Fall Semester.

It has been a pleasure serving you all as Director for the past decade, and I wish you all a happy and productive summer, and beyond.

Ronald J. Zboray, CLST Director
